My running route crosses four Mississippi bridges. This 1901 former railroad bridge takes me to Nicollet Island.

I’m cooking pork carnitas my favorite way: 1. Place Boston butt in pot; 2. Cover with cold water; 3. Simmer, lid on, 45 minutes; 4. Simmer, lid off, until all water is gone (several hours); 5. Fry the fall-apart pork in its own fat. The flavor is intense.

Headed over to the twin of Minneapolis for a Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra concert in the Ordway’s new concert hall.

After warming up with a bowl of ramen in delicious pork broth in a large Asian supermarket, I was delighted to find green tea Kit Kats: one of over 200 Kit Kat flavors in Japan. I was transported.

Valentine’s Day candy sustained me as I did things with fractions I have not done in living memory.

Walked in search of traces of the past using these old insurance maps: At Milwaukee Road Depot: 1914, newly enlisted sailor, Norman Soley, waits for his train; 2018, this is a lovely event space, with adjacent Marriott hotels.

Spent my morning electronically clipping Sanborn (insurance) maps of 1910 Minneapolis. Assembled maps for 20 blocks I’ll walk with a friend tomorrow.

Walked to the Target Atrium, Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis to watch Minnesota Orchestra musicians performing 20th century chamber music. I did not know the harp could be so expressive.

Took off and tossed my old walking shoes at Schuler Shoes, walked out in these. When I travel, they’re backups for my boots.

On my run, the lighthouse on the Mississippi’s Hall’s Island deferred to the sun.

Walked to Seward Co-op to buy groceries. It meets 95% of our food needs without having to navigate endless aisles of manufactured food. I appreciate the quality, emphasis on local sourcing, minimal packaging, and keeping money in our local economy.

Walked on fresh snow to the bus to the Frauenshuh Cancer Center for my quarterly topup (injection). The tumor continues to be dormant. I’m grateful.
