Foraging for Brioche Buns

Jul 2, 2021

My bicycling theme today was ‘Foraging for Brioche Buns.’ Eventually struck gold with buns from the very excellent Rose Street Patisserie. I’ve double-bagged and frozen them until July 4. We only make hamburgers once or twice a year, so they need to be good.

Breakfast View

Jul 1, 2021

On our cycle ride: breakfast view, Lake Harriet.

Time for Gratitude

Jun 30, 2021

Celebrated over grilled cheese sandwiches and beer at Longfellow’s. We had been to my oncologist and agreed to resume drug therapy because my tumor is waking up: the therapy could work for years. As a student, I celebrated poor grades, good grades less so. Grateful for good healthcare.

Vietnamese Baking

Jun 29, 2021

Met a friend early (8:00 a.m.) to cycle to an unassuming bakery in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul. Trung Nam, owned by a Vietnamese family, makes some of the best croissants in town. They sell out fast, hence the early start.

Home of Breakfast Cereal

Jun 28, 2021

In Northeast Minneapolis, cycled past a node in the global industrial breakfast cereal supply chain.

Rainbow Run

Jun 27, 2021

Hundreds of runners unexpectedly surged towards us, just as we reached the middle of a bridge. The starting line for the Rainbow Run 5K was just beyond the bridge in Boom Island Park.

Model Railroad Sale

Jun 26, 2021

Locked up my bike outside the Twin City Model Railroad Museum. In a dark room where the lights had failed, other nerdy old guys were pointing their phone flashlights at tables filled with surplus models that were on sale. I did likewise, looked, but didn’t buy.

Veggie Paella

Jun 25, 2021

My first (almost) veggie paella tasted pretty good, but I need to cautiously work on developing a deeper, more caramelized base crust (socarrat). Used Arborio rather than Bomba rice (I’ll do that again next time), and chicken (rather than veggie) broth.

Ferns by a Trail

Jun 24, 2021

The trails were so lovely today. Ferns on Brown’s Creek State Trail.

Pedestrian Lift Bridge

Jun 24, 2021

Cycled to Wisconsin across a rarity: a working lift bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. Rode in a friend’s truck part-way, then cycled the Gateway and Brown’s Creek State Trails to Stillwater where the bridge crosses the St. Croix River. A new bridge now carries vehicle traffic.

Minnesota-Grown

Jun 23, 2021

Leftover mushroom risotto tasted pretty good: made patties for dinner. The mushroom, lettuce, tomatoes, and asparagus are all Minnesota-grown.

How to Control Housplants

Jun 23, 2021

Posted How to Control a Houseplant Irrigation System.

Norwegian Nordic Blu Salmon

Jun 22, 2021

Towards the end of my cycle ride, picked up Norwegian Nordic Blu Salmon at Coastal Seafoods, claiming their over 55 discount on Tuesdays. Dwight cooked it to smoky, silky perfection on a cedar board. The foil was an unsuccessful experiment to save and crisp the skin.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic

Jun 21, 2021

Cycled to a clinic to get blood drawn by a phlebotomist. Later, held a biweekly ESL (English as a second language) Zoom session with an adult student who is studying to be a phlebotomist. We’re working through a text book learning to say words like “ethylenediaminetetraacetic.”

Yet Another Controller

Jun 20, 2021

Finished building the latest controller for watering and misting one rack of houseplants. It communicates wirelessly over a Z-Wave mesh with a Hubitat home automation hub.

Lobster Roll

Jun 19, 2021

Cycled with friends to dinner in a traditional Nordeast Minneapolis neighborhood bar, 1029 Bar. Feasted on their specialty: “top-rated lobster roll in the nation.”
