Michelle and Barack’s First Kiss

Mar 9, 2019

Walked in search of history, including the site of the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear chain reaction (1942), a 2.5 ton cosmic ray detector that flew on space shuttle Challenger (1985), rotting in an alley, and the site of Michelle and Barack Obama’s first kiss.

Waiting with the Glitterati

Mar 7, 2019

The glitterati smiled while I waited for a haircut.

All My Relations Gallery

Mar 6, 2019

Visited All My Relations Gallery to see an exhibition honoring missing and murdered Native American women. While a missing white woman can get saturation coverage, these women usually go unreported in our media.

Stocking up on Walking Shoes

Mar 5, 2019

I enjoy wearing out walking shoes. Bought two more pairs at Schuler Shoes: they recycled the down-at-heel pair.

Lobby Invasions

Mar 4, 2019

It was unusually cold, so it was a good day to walk the Minneapolis Skyways with a friend, and explore lovely old lobbies.

Tax Refund

Mar 3, 2019

Filed my taxes, I’m owed a Federal refund: it’s time to make an all-expense-spared impulse purchase.

Game Room

Mar 2, 2019

Went to a party in a house with about 30 pinball machines in the basement.

The Tale of Genji

Feb 28, 2019

Viewed depictions of “The Tale of Genji,” the world’s first novel, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It was written by a woman, Murasaki Shikibu, over 1,000 years ago in Kyoto, Japan. Themes stand the test of time, including love, lust, and the disempowerment of women.

Franklin Learning Center

Feb 27, 2019

100 years ago, Scandinavian immigrants studied next to this fireplace in the basement of a Carnegie library. Today, Somali refugees study English, math, citizenship, and GED next to this same fireplace in a library basement. My Wednesday gig.

A Suitcase Finds New Purpose

Feb 26, 2019

My old suitcase headed for the exit. It now belongs to a friend and her daughter. They make felt mittens they’ll display in the open suitcase at shows. I posted recently about this vulcanized fiber case needing a new home.

Inhaling a Brownie

Feb 25, 2019

I ate the brownie in half the time it took to drink the cappuccino.

Regifted Amaryllis

Feb 24, 2019

With 40+ miles per hour winds, and blowing snow, it was a perfect day to organize our nest, hang pictures, and enjoy this amaryllis. The plant was regifted to us by a friend, concerned it is poisonous to her cats. We were happy to give it a home.

Unwanted Electrical Outlet

Feb 23, 2019

“Disappeared” an electrical outlet. There’s an outlet behind the pillar, but the developer had added an outlet to the middle of this wall. Today I removed it and Dwight painted a cover plate. (Minneapolis building codes don’t allow drywall over a live electrical box.) Now, the wall, the plate, and the Guthrie Theater all match.

Orchestra Hall Reflections

Feb 23, 2019

Walked to Orchestra Hall to listen to the Minnesota Orchestra. Downtown merged with reflections of the lobby.
