Chopped and prepared veggies for two dinners: cabbage and onion for a braise tonight, and roasted eggplant and zucchini for a veggie lasagne tomorrow night. One of the joys of travel, for me, is renewed appreciation for everyday home activities.

Meals For Cooler Weather
Decided it’s time for cooler weather meals. Braised local root vegetables: carrots, celeriac, onions, turnip (purple), and potatoes. The Dutch oven contains a pumped-up-umami base. The turnip came with greens in excellent condition, so I added them later
Corkscrew Failure
Our corkscrew fell apart. The solution was obvious: screw caps.
Preserving Broccoli
Dwight bought way too much broccoli at the farmers market, then drove up to Fargo to see his mom for a few days, leaving me with the broccoli. I roasted it, which halved the volume, set aside enough for two or three meals and froze the rest. I’ll use the chopped stalks in soup.
Pink Sky
Woke up to an unusually pink sky, presaging much-needed rain. Living in an apartment, we’re more aware of the sky and less aware of trees than when we lived in a house.
Dinner Tonight
Roasted Brussels sprouts, deconstructed eggplant parmigiana.
Nothing is Better than Anything
Picked up samples for a carpet runner in our hallway. They didn’t resonate: to me they seemed rather blah. Decided one option was to do nothing and leave the floor bare. So often, with stuff or with life, nothing is better than anything.
Three Score and Ten
Marzipan, almonds, sponge, strawberry jam, whipped cream: my once-a-year cake. Three score and ten. Life’s good
Mystery Box
Pleasantly surprised by a mystery box in the package room, clearly from someone who knows how to treat me right. Apparently the person on the front desk who signed for this wasn’t intoxicated and is at least 21 years of age. I’ll learn more when I open this tomorrow.
Sausages on the Weber
It’s sausage-and-cabbage Saturday: summer on the Weber, winter in a braise.
