All Set for Sausage Saturday

Looked straight ahead as I walked past Kramarczuk’s extensive display of cakes to pick up garlicky house-made Ukrainian sausage at the meat counter. Next, I braved the chilly walk-in beer cooler at Surdyk’s, just down the road, for a local brew. Earlier I’d picked up crusty bread, a massive cabbage, and ice cream at Seward… Continue reading All Set for Sausage Saturday

Sausage Saturday’s Back!

It’s the first Sausage Saturday at home in two months. Dwight says my braise is so much better than his, pure flattery, it means I cook. It does help to push up the umami by remembering to brown all the ingredients, including the cabbage, then adding tomato paste, shoyu and fish sauce. Meanwhile, Dwight completed our taxes today and I’d rather cook.

Sausage Saturday Shopping

On my bike ride, picked up the missing ingredients for Sausage Saturday: Ukrainian sausage from Kramarczuk’s, crusty bread from Surdyk’s, and over-packaged baby kale from Lunds and Byerlys.

Sausage Saturday

It’s Sausage Saturday, its a warm day, it’s time for our first barbecue of 2022. I picked up the bacon brats at the local farmers market. We also barbecued (in foil) cabbage with soy sauce, butter, and garlic, and carrots with olives and olive oil.

Our Saturday Ritual

It’s Sausage Saturday, which means sausage and cabbage on the barbecue, a movie, and ice cream in the intermission. Tonight’s picks: The Kids Are All Right, pausing for this excellent cashew-milk-based ice cream.

No Sausages Today

It’s Tip-The-Fridge Week, which preempts our traditional Sausage Saturday. Tonight we’re having carnitas from the freezer with polenta and a substantial salad. We’re still having ice cream: an intriguing small-batch pint from a local store.

Meatless Sausage

Something different on my walk: picked up Italian sausage from a butcher that doesn’t sell meat products, The Herbivorous Butcher. It was good on a pizza for lunch, and the rest will go into our weekly Sausage Saturday cabbage braise.

Sausages on the Weber

It’s sausage-and-cabbage Saturday: summer on the Weber, winter in a braise.

A Bit of What You Fancy Does You Good

It’s Sausage Saturday which means there’ll be a (Nathan Lane) movie with an intermission with ice cream. Tonight: Gooey Butter Cake ice cream. “Cream cheese ice cream layered with crumbles of vanilla cake and a swirl of caramel-butterscotch sauce.” Dubious nutritional value. Perfect.

Ben, Jerry & Rhubarb

Today is Sausage Saturday, a tradition that always includes ice cream. The big question is: which flavor goes better with rhubarb sauce, vanilla or caramel? I suspect the answer is: both. Yesterday, Dwight made the sauce from rhubarb he’d harvested from his sister’s garden.

Good Writing Wins

Sausage, ice cream, and a movie are key ingredients for Sausage Saturday. Dwight usually researches movies, then sends me links to reviews of three movies. Tonight’s winner: Living. The screenplay is by British author, Kazuo Ishiguro; the writing will be good.

Everything in its Place

My walk today took me to three food stores: Kramarczuk’s for Ukrainian sausage for Sausage Saturday, Surdyk’s deli for bread, and Lunds & Byerly’s for supermarket stuff. In Palm Springs we prepared most of our meals, but cooking in our own kitchen is always the best.

A Little of What You Fancy…

Stocked up at Seward Co-op for our weekly Sausage Saturday. “A little of what you fancy does you good.” (From a 1915 English music hall song.)

Froyo

It’s Sausage Saturday, which means a movie with a frozen treat in the intermission. Tonight: vanilla yogurt riched up with heavy cream and honey.

Buying Just Enough

We spend the majority of our grocery dollars here at Wedge Co-op. Their bulk section is wonderful: today I bought about an ounce of black peppercorns and just enough peanut butter cups to chop into a fro-yo treat I’m making for Sausage Saturday.

A Fine Pairing

Our Sausage Saturday always includes a movie with ice cream in the intermission. Tonight: homemade vanilla bean ice cream, nicely paired with a thoughtful gift from a friend who spotted my Cult Cookies post last week.

Ambivalent about Rain

Walked in heavy rain to the farmers market at Mill City Museum. Filled a pack with local produce: bacon brats for Sausage Saturday, tomatoes, green beans, and Indian eggplant. Today’s rain deterred shoppers while making a dent in the drought: farmers are always at the mercy of the weather.

Movie Night

Tonight, after braised sausage and cabbage (it is Sausage Saturday): “House of Gucci.”

Freedom

As I sometimes do, stocked up for our weekly “Sausage Saturday” with smoky Ukrainian sausage from Nordeast Minneapolis institution, Kramarczuk’s. It was founded by a couple who immigrated in the 1940’s from Ukraine, a country which had suffered terribly under Stalin and Hitler.

The Slicing Of The Cabbage

St. Patrick’s Day Eve 2019. Conducted the traditional Slicing of the Cabbage. Actually, we often have braised cabbage and sausages on a Saturday.
