Unwinding the Mystery of Strandbeests

Dutch kinetic sculpture artist Theo Jansen’s wind-powered strandbeests are the inspiration for my next LEGO project. From 1990 onwards, he has taken these strand (Dutch for beach) creatures through twelve periods of evolution.

Inspired, I want to build thematically similar creatures using LEGO. But where to begin with this geometric challenge? A simple Web search led me to a page on the DIY Walkers site devoted to building these creatures with LEGO. The authors explain some of the theory and even include a visual linkage simulator, allowing readers to design their own “legs.”

To get in the groove of designing my own strandbeest, I’m first copying a design from DIY Walkers. The beast will have eight legs, but my initial task was to build just one leg.

Visualizing this mechanism was a mental challenge. I’m now ready to build seven more legs and complete the beast’s body. However, my LEGO building is on hold while I wait for some beams (linkages) I ordered via Bricklink.

  1. I wrote you another comment, then accidentally closed the window as I clicked the Post Comment button. If you get this twice, I apologize. I wanted to let you know that you have a redirect hack on your site. Specifically on this page: https://tomwilson.com/2018/01/freakin-cheap-how-to-fly-with-a-pet-without-paying-fees.html/
It’s a common hack that you can read about on Google. I hope you’re able to fix it – and that I can read that page someday! Best of luck!

    1. Thanks, Mel. I’ve just done a scan, cleanup, WordPress reinstall, and increased the amount of security. Greatly appreciate you notifying me of this issue.
