Wake-up Weather

Jun 13, 2022

Wake-up weather presaged a steamy couple of days. This afternoon I imagined myself in New Orleans as I rode my bike along leafy streets with a stop for ice cream.

Converging Parts

Jun 12, 2022

Upgraded the water supply line to an industrial pallet, part of our “garden on wheels.” It doesn’t look like much, but it brought together disparate parts. The line is flexible, tough silicone tubing (sold for beer production) threaded through a PET mesh sleeve for protection. The line assembly passes through a grommet then a rigid… Continue reading Converging Parts

Sushi with the Family

Jun 11, 2022

Got with the family for sushi. The younger nephew, now 13, was suitably attired.

Back to the Fifties

Jun 10, 2022

Walked over to Theatre in the Round for “Perfect Arrangement.” Set in 1950, sham marriages, State Department witch hunts against LGBTQ people and “moral turpitude.” I fear people who want America to be like this again.

Nursing Priorities

Jun 9, 2022

Nursed a Surly Furious waiting for Dwight to show from his greenhouse gig. He’d been nursing seedlings from an almost-extinct Hawaiian plant that he’d previously pollinated. I was happy to wait.

Avoiding Kink Puns

Jun 8, 2022

After exploring just about every other possibility, finally figured out why water wasn’t reaching one set of drippers in a planter in our building. Stayed away from kink puns.

Three Princes and a Pencil

Posted Three Princes and a Pencil.

The Hamshank Redemption

Jun 6, 2022

Used up some items in the fridge and freezer, cooked up multiple meals: Braised radish and turnip greens with baby turnips, apple, …and ham shank; Kidney beans, mirepoix, …and ham shank, with (to-be-revived) polenta. There’s still more ham shank in the freezer.

Belt And Suspenders

Jun 5, 2022

Saved our files to two thumb drives. All our data is continuously backed up off-site, but about once a year I save an encrypted snapshot of the data to be retained indefinitely. At about $24 for 256GB, thumb drives are inexpensive insurance.

Time To Split

Jun 4, 2022

Thanked a cutting board for its long service then tossed it. I should’ve done this a long time ago when the cracks appeared, but we have a history together going back 50+ years. Two replacement boards, one plastic, one teak, maintained a respectful distance.

Celebratory Donuts

Jun 3, 2022

It’s National Donut Day, but I don’t need an excuse to enjoy an old-fashioned with my morning coffee. In the bag: two rhubarb fritters for Dwight and me to mark our 35th anniversary this evening.

When Doves Cry

Jun 2, 2022

Meandered through Minneapolis on my bike. Got a sneak preview of a new Prince mural that “will be unveiled at a Purple Block Party” tonight.

Journey Back In Time

Jun 1, 2022

Dropped off a package in the lovely, but incongruous, Art Deco lobby of the main Downtown post office. We need some smart people to figure out how to repurpose this space for the 21st century.

Coil Cars

May 31, 2022

A freight train slowly creaked across our path. Google Lens identified these as “coil cars” for carrying large rolls of sheet metal. A Google Search for CNW 19221 brought up photographs of the actual freight car and confirmed its purpose.

Memorial Day

May 30, 2022

Flags were flying today over 3rd Avenue Bridge, Minneapolis: Memorial Day, 2022.  Posted Reminders of War.

Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam

May 29, 2022

A surprise on our Sunday morning walk: Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam was open to the public. We peered into massive spaces normally hidden from us, and experienced the calm of the lock chamber contrasting with an unusually turbulent Mississippi.
