Hiked beside the River Tyne with friends. At Wylam, we refreshed ourselves in arguably the best pub in the world.

End of my Walk Around Newcastle, 4 miles short of goal. I may finish it when a tunnel under the river reopens.

Today, it was hard to stop walking. The sunset was so beautiful when I reached Tynemouth, I kept walking.

Enjoyed an Indian meal in Newbiggin-by-the-sea with my brother.

Walked, chatted with my best friend back to junior school. Sat, chatted with my brother and a dear family friend.

Walked with friends around the extensive grounds of Gibside Hall, south of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Walked through postindustrial Britain. A wind turbine towers above the chimneys of an abandoned aluminum smelter.

Warkworth Castle, near the start of my walk to Newbiggin-by-the-sea. Today will be my longest beach walk, ever.

After breakfast of kippers from the local smokehouse, one last look back at Craster’s harbor and Dunstanburgh Castle.

Northumberland is beautiful, even in the rain.

11:00 a.m., today, started my multi-day hike in the pouring rain from Bamburgh, Northumberland, England.

At MSP. Tuesday p.m. I’ll be in Craster, Northumberland, UK. But first: MSP-AMS, AMS-EDI, train, bus, hike 14 miles.

Prepared for winter: pulled potted plants off life support.
