In loco parentis, day 2. The younger nephew was particularly ebullient when we met him after school. His flying backpack survived.

Nephew time, Mom’s away. We first used sharp knives to carve pumpkins. Then we cut up an old towel to make wicks to burn vegetable oil.

Walked to the highest point in Minneapolis: the foot of the “Witch’s Hat” water tower in Prospect Park.

Nature strutted its stuff on a birch stump as we headed towards the end of our final Superior Hiking Trail walk for this year.

Walked past a beaver lodge in the middle of a pond of their own creation.

On our walk to breakfast at our current base: Bluefin Bay Resort on Lake Superior. Stoked for another day of hiking.

It was a day of contemplative trails, then wide-open vistas.

Cycled to Target’s Downtown flagship store to buy sunscreen. This mural, with its nod to the company’s 1902 Dayton’s origins, caught my eye.

Cycled the Cannon Falls Trail. Spotted this paddlewheeler, docked at Red Wing, en route to New Orleans. It entered service in 2015.
