Curated Gorp
Curated Gorp

With a hiking trip Up North next week, it was time for the annual Curation of the Gorp. I like to select a range of ingredients so we can vary the mixture each day.

Something New
Something New

On our Superior Hiking Trail hike today, a view we’ve seen so many times before. The evergreens were punctuated with something I don’t recall seeing before: golden deciduous tamaracks, a member of the pine family that loses its needles in the fall.

The End of a Long Hike
The End of a Long Hike

We hiked a long hike. Towards the end, at Cascade River, our nephews still had plenty energy. How the younger one got on that rock, we’ll never know. His brother was being more cautious.

Superior Hiking Trail: Fall 2021
Every year, around this time, we head up to the North Shore of Lake Superior for a few days to walk sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. We stopped in Duluth for a night, then continued on to our usual destination, Bluefin Bay, a resort on the shores of Lake Superior at Tofte. Our two… Continue reading Superior Hiking Trail: Fall 2021

2021: Spring

May 15, 2021
Superior Hiking Trail, Spring 2021
It felt strange, this past week, to pack our bags then drive up the interstate to Duluth. This was only the second time we’ve been away from home in almost fourteen months. In Duluth we headed for the hills to walk part of the Skyline Trail before checking into a hotel for one night. Next… Continue reading Superior Hiking Trail, Spring 2021

Lake Agnes in and Out
Lake Agnes in and Out

Lake Agnes from the Superior Hiking Trail. Normally we do a through-hike, here, but today we did an in-and-out. This meant we got to see places we love twice, from different angles. The lake would be smaller and more than four feet shallower without a beaver dam.

In the past few days, we made our annual trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior to hike sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. We had booked a townhouse in Tofte, Minnesota, back in the Before-Times, when Covid-19 was something that was only happening on the other side of the world. Our nephews, 11… Continue reading Snapshots: Superior Hiking Trail 2020

Our Annual Walk on Fall Leaves
Every October, after the peak of Fall foliage has subsided, we head up to the North Shore of Lake Superior to walk sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. We like this time of year: the trails are uncrowded, the temperatures are good for hiking, and mosquitoes are done for the year. Besides, we don’t need… Continue reading Our Annual Walk on Fall Leaves

Superior Hiking Trail 2015
We’re almost through a week of exploring the Superior Hiking Trail. We visit this trail just about every year. One year we hiked from lodging to lodging, but usually we just do day hikes.
