Superior Hiking Trail: Fall 2021

Source: Superior Hiking Trail Association.

Every year, around this time, we head up to the North Shore of Lake Superior for a few days to walk sections of the Superior Hiking Trail.

We stopped in Duluth for a night, then continued on to our usual destination, Bluefin Bay, a resort on the shores of Lake Superior at Tofte. Our two nephews (14 and almost 13) and their parents joined us at Bluefin. After three nights, they headed home, while Dwight and I stayed an extra two nights at Caribou Highlands Lodge, a few miles further north.

I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

Duluth from the Superior Hiking Trail. Lake Superior is just out of frame.
It was a blustery walk across the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge back to our hotel after dinner.
On our way from Duluth to Bluefin Bay we visited George Crosby Manitou State Park to hike trails we haven’t hiked before.
Nephews, full of life, Bluefin Bay, parents, uncles, and a pumpkin looking on.

Wetlands on our way to Temperance River.
Temperance River. Despite their best efforts, neither boy fell in the river. From there we walked back to Bluefin Bay via the Gitchi-Gami Trail.

At Carlton Peak, the nephews opted for the road less traveled: a pattern repeated throughout the day wherever there were rocks.
Lake Agnes.
Lake Agnes would be a lot smaller without this beaver dam.

Our final hike. We followed a route up one side of Cascade River for a few miles until we crossed at a bridge. We then walked back on the other side.
The end of our final hike: Cascade River.
