On my walk, the view upriver from the Franklin Avenue Bridge. At this point, the Mississippi is slow-moving, so it’s frozen from edge to edge. Beyond the Interstate 94 bridge, downtown Minneapolis stretches out to the left, and the University of Minnesota Medical Center is on the right. As I walked, the temperature was slowly rising, bringing snow once I was safely home.

Halloween Snowstorm
Anybody who’s lived in these parts any length of time knows about the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 when 28.4 inches of snow fell, a single-storm record for the Twin Cities. I was thinking about that as I stood in heavy rain waiting for the bus to school this morning. Later, it turned to sleet and then snow, which is now accumulating on grassy areas. Hard to believe it was 80 degrees on Tuesday.
Ready to Roll
With my bike hanging from the cycle rack, pumped up the tires. The promise of temperatures in the fifties this coming week had stirred the fair-weather cyclist within me. A quick wipe-down with a damp rag, and a dose of chain lubricant, and my bike will be good to go.
Winter Commute
A bicycle commuter seemed unfazed it was 2°F (-17°C) as I waited for the bus this morning.
A Slow Day
Nibbled cookies a friend brought over, drank vast quantities of water (doctor’s orders) and looked out at falling snow.
An Inside Day
Walked in rain to a lecture about architect Walter Gropius. Back at our apartment, read by the (gas) fire and looked up at fresh snow on the mountains.
Suburban Bus Stop
My trekking pole came in handy as I clambered over an icy mound while the bus driver waited patiently.
Avoiding Frostbite
This is an unusual viewpoint for me: drove our car for the first time this winter. I always walk to my Friday gig, but today was frostbite weather. The car was a comfortable 64°F when I started out.
A Special Place
Dwight showed a friend and me around the University of Minnesota teaching and research greenhouse where he volunteers. This gorgeous space has four rooms, each with a different climate, including this desert room. The rainforest room smelled and felt wonderful on this frigid day.
Arctic Journey
After three days sheltering from the Arctic blast, screwed up the will to walk one block to our local bar for Reubens and beer.
