Exercycle

This week I’m moving on exercise equipment rather than foot: it takes time to recover from a concussion. Some of the gym equipment in our building has been dispersed to separate rooms that can each be reserved by one person to reduce chances of Covid transmission.

Staying Upright

Walked around Lake of the Isles while managing to stay upright. From now on, when it’s icy, I use a trekking pole.

Lake Walk

Snow accumulated as we walked around Lake of the Isles.

Trespassing on a Rail Bridge

Walked across the Mississippi from Nicollet Island on this 1893 Burlington Northern Santa Fe bridge, watching for freight trains, Northstar commuter trains, and cops. We then reversed course back across the bridge to avoid getting stuck in a narrow gap in a fence.

Old-Postcards Walks

To add interest to winter walks, started to add pins, linked to old postcards, to an interactive map.

He Seemed Lucid

Walked with a friend as temperatures rose above freezing. This guy seemed quite lucid as he assured us he had been working out.

First Walk of 2021

Walked, as we always do on the first morning of the year. The bridge and the decapitated pole are remnants of this former railroad right of way. We’ll wait until next year for the bar lunch we usually include in this first walk.

Yarn Bombs

On our walk, spotted these yarn bombs. A sign reminded us today is the winter solstice, and invited us to take one of the macramé stars. We didn’t take one, a photo sufficed. “From this point forward we begin our journey back to the light.”

Perfect Perch

It was a perfect day to get outside, meet a friend, ride our bikes, and stand at our favorite perch to watch trains going by.

A Safe Place to Sit

On my walk through the University of Minnesota’s East Bank campus, it wasn’t too cold to sit outside and enjoy a coffee.
