It still feels like a new experience to have a family meal in a restaurant and our young nephews haven’t trashed the place. Axel’s Bonfire, Blaine, Minnesota. They grow up fast.

The Language of Springtime

Wild spring onions, nettles, fiddlehead ferns, morels, spruce tips, ramps, the language of springtime. Tonight I’ll make morel risotto.

Cataplana

Walked a relaxed 22 Km south on a ridge trail, to a village with fab coffee, over rolling hills, to our final stop on the Rota Vicentina trail system: Vila do Bispo. Choosing fish for dinner was too difficult so we ordered Cataplana, a wonderful Algarve version of bouillabaisse.

Transported

After warming up with a bowl of ramen in delicious pork broth in a large Asian supermarket, I was delighted to find green tea Kit Kats: one of over 200 Kit Kat flavors in Japan. I was transported.

Walked across the Mississippi to Dinkytown for corned beef hash at Al’s. This 14-stool diner is older than me.

A Reward Lunch

After a morning of manual labor, we revived ourselves with udon, bibimbap, and local brew Sweet Child of Vine.
