Vacation Rentals: Embracing Imperfection

We’re in Tucson, hiking wonderful trails, with trailheads just minutes from where we’re staying.

Our legs aren’t quite as supple as they once were, so we’re having a rest day. We’re relaxing in a rental apartment and contemplating a short walk out to lunch.

Vacation rentals are great value, especially now, with hotel room prices heading for the stratosphere. They also reduce contact with other people, an important consideration with Covid still running amuck.

We’ve never left a bad review for apartments or houses we’ve rented. We remind ourselves there’s a proud owner somewhere out there that we don’t want to offend by being petty. The Tucson apartment is good value for money, clean, with all the basics we need.

We figured out the owners live within an hour’s drive of Seattle by asking questions of an Alexa device they’d thoughtfully set up. Alexa wouldn’t tell us where the account-holder lives, but it did answer questions about weather and drive times, allowing us to vector in on the Pacific Northwest. They clearly rely on a Tucson-based cleaning service.

It’s unreasonable to expect a rental apartment to be perfect, but here goes, anyway. Here’s three appliances we usually clean when we move in:

We removed a fine coating of coffee residue from the inside, including the reservoir.
We removed a handful of lint from the lint filter.
Forgotten crumb tray.

I’ve posted previously about embracing imperfection, wabi-sabi. We’ll be leaving a positive review, and no, as usual, we won’t mention the coffee maker, clothes dryer, or toaster. In the great scheme of things, it’s just not important.

Tomorrow we get back on the trails, and that’s a good thing.
