Snapshots: Superior Hiking Trail 2018

Last week. as we generally do at this time of the year, we day-hiked sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. We stayed in two lodges so we could enjoy different sections of the trail without having to spend much time in the car.

Blue blazes, painted on trees, usually helped to keep us on the right path.

Day 1: Long Hike via Lake Agnes

The lodge where we were staying provided a shuttle to the trailhead. We then walked 19 miles back to the lodge, arriving just before sundown. Hikes during the rest of the week were significantly shorter.

Ice forming on a twig. Daytime temperatures all week were in the 30’s and 40’s Fahrenheit–comfortable hiking weather.

Beaver dam. Without beavers, Lake Agnes would be much smaller.

Day 2: Devil River Gorge and Pincushion Mountain

We started with breakfast at a typical small town cafe, Blue Water Cafe, in Grand Marais. We then walked back to the car past touristy businesses, and headed for the trails.

We walked through woods, past deep gorges, rapids, and waterfalls, and climbed to a ridge trail which led to Pincushion Mountain.

Pincushion Mountain: basalt, thrown up a billion years ago, trees growing in cracks (“pins in a cushion”), looking towards Lake Superior.

Day 3: Cascade River

We hiked trails that mostly followed the Cascade River. We hiked upstream for a few miles, then crossed the river and took another trail that brought us back to the starting point.

The “root beer” water is due to tannins from up-stream swamps.

Day 4: Carlton Peak and Temperance River State Park

Our walk took us to Carlton Peak, and along yet another thundering river in a gorge, Temperance River.

Day 5: Oberg and Leveaux Mountains

It was raining when we woke, and the radar implied it was set in for the day. Eventually we determined the rain was fairly light, so we headed for the trails. Instead of one long hike. we did two loops: Oberg Mountain and Leveaux Mountain.

Next day, we returned to Minneapolis.

We always spend 3 nights in the same unit at Bluefin Bay. We’ll be back next year.
