I’m back in Minneapolis from my travels, so it is a priority to plan future travels. Today I booked an entire English castle for 2016. It’s just a little castle, actually a gatehouse, it’s only for a week, and it costs about the same as two hotel rooms. I want to introduce my nephews…
Continue reading Our Castle in EnglandToday we start an adventure with our nephews (7 and 8) and their parents.
At the start of today’s hike in Northumberland, England, we came upon a hiker who had slipped and made a faceplant on the street. He was elderly, and his vision was sub-par. He was bleeding from cuts beside one eye and on his wrist. My brother-in-law had a surprising variety of wound dressings in his…
Continue reading A Tale of Two Falls We stood behind a crowd at Edinburgh Castle waiting for the one-o’clock cannon to fire. Many eyes were fixed on cell phones to catch the moment to share on Facebook. Bodies in Edinburgh, minds in other places. Booked flights for an adventure with our nephews (they’ll be 7 and 8) and their parents.
Planned an old-fashioned afternoon tea in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, for family and friends.
Edinburgh, first evening, nephews and their parents in tow. Misty view from main shopping street, Princes Street.
We climbed Arthur’s Seat, then visited Holyroodhouse, where the Queen stays when in Edinburgh. She wasn’t home.
We did a lot of peering through gaps at Edinburgh Castle.
My little backpackers watch their train arrive at Edinburgh Waverly.
This is real travel. My childhood friend’s neighbor’s bunnies demanded their attention for the longest time.
We stayed close to “our” castle. I’ve previously posted Our Castle in England.
Took my sister-in-law and my better half on a tour of my childhood haunts in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Happy kids, day’s fishing with dad and a guide, plus Mom, walking back after dinner.
Posted A Tale of Two Falls.
A few frames of Harry Potter were shot here at Alnwick Castle. My nephew jumped in the air and continued the magic.
Walked past a Brexit polling station/beer garden.
Staying in our friends’ kid-friendly home in Newcastle upon Tyne while the parents visit London for a few days.
Rode this replica “Steam Elephant” at Beamish open air museum. The original was built in Northeast England in 1815.
Nephews’ and their uncles’ backpacks ready for the next adventure: train from Newcastle upon Tyne to York.
We explored the National Railway Museum.
Spent much of the day in, above, under, and around York Minster.
Friends, family, cakes, finger sandwiches, scones, sausage rolls. A perfect last evening in Newcastle and the UK.
The boys dumped our UK change into a charity bucket at NCL.
