March 21, 2019. My day started with a conga line. We were staying in cabins by a Minnesota lake. Family, brothers-in-law, my sister-in-law and their families, my mother-in-law, and goodness knows who else. But there were many more people, enough for the line to snake around the entire lake. I wanted none of this, so…
Continue reading Getting on BoardTraveler, your footprints are the only road, nothing else. Traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk. As you walk, you make your own road, and when you look back you see the path you will never travel again. Traveler, there is no road only a ship’s wake on the…
Continue reading There Is No RoadThis week we’ve been staying in the Ishihara House, a VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) above the town of Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii. The house is plantation-style, with a 1930’s old-Hawaii vibe and nods to Japan. And it’s less expensive than most hotel rooms on this island. From our lanai we get a fine view of…

Walked around a place smelling of lush tropical vegetation and aviation fuel. Airside at Honolulu HNL.
Slowed down in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii.
Papayas figured prominently at our VRBO.
On our walk, rain accentuated colors: mahogany, sustainably farmed.
Enjoyed my favorite type of meal in Hawaii, a plate lunch. Usually there are two scoops of rice, mayo-based macaroni salad, and fish or meat cooked in an Asian style.
Hiked Kauai’s muddy Okolehao Trail to great views. Some areas in the distance are still off-limits after 50-inches of rain in 24 hours in April 2018 destroyed roads, bridges, and trails. This was the most rain ever recorded in the United States.
Nursed a depiction of a volcanic eruption while waiting for a delicious Hawaiian plate lunch.
Hiked the Nu’alolo Trail, Koke’e State Park.
Our hike in Koke’e State Park started with this view of the Napali Coast. We hiked backcountry trails where most of the vegetation is still native. Towards the end it rained, and we hit mud. Hot showers, the washer and dryer, and Dwight’s boot-cleaning skills.
Our hike, today, had plenty of bling, including a waterfall descending thousands of feet. (The waterfall is in this picture.)
Came across these endangered Hawaiian black-necked stilts on our beach walk.
Posted Snapshots: Koke’e State Park.
Hiked beautiful Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve trails: Kuilau Ridge Trail and Moalepe Trail.
Hiked trails above Kauai’s Waimea Canyon.
Watched our overnight flight to Minneapolis being provisioned at Honolulu HNL.
