Tonight we’re staying in a Tokyo Haneda Airport hotel, between flights. Made a quick side-trip to the Kawasaki Daishi temple. This statue depicts Kobo Daishi, a ninth century monk who established the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage. We’ll walk part of it for a day later in this trip.

MSP–HND
Boarding at MSP with our nephew and his dad. Grateful for this chance to explore Japan together.
Avoiding Russia
Posted Avoiding Russia. Next week, we’ll be flying on one of Delta’s newest planes from Minneapolis to Tokyo. Under normal circumstances, this journey would take us through Russian airspace for several hours.
Avoiding Russia
In normal times a flight from Minneapolis to Tokyo would take us through Russian airspace for several hours. This is no longer possible.
A Treat
Economy, aisle, right behind First, a favorite seat with excess leg room. A lovely flight attendant gave me a rather generous pour of the wine they’re serving up front. This is a treat, I’m grateful, and just mildly numb.
Stations of the Flight
Deicing fluid battered the fuselage at MSP, en route to Palm Springs.
Atomic Me
Got the first of four radioactive infusions. For a few days there’s no kissing or flying, which is easy, as I’m in Minneapolis and Dwight’s in Palm Springs. When I do return to Palm Springs, I may set off an airport radiation detector, which could be interesting.
Everybody’s Going Somewhere
Between 10 lanes of traffic at the intersection of the Metro A and C lines, Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station, on our way to LAX.
Sand, Sea, Sky
Broke the journey from Matsue to Okayama to visit San’inkaigan National Park to walk on massive sand dunes beside the Sea of Japan. Okayama Station was bustling, a contrast to my last few days. An elevator took me to the welcome solitude of a hotel room high above the station.
