Whitewashing

Cycled behind the Pioneers Monument in Northeast Minneapolis. The front depicts a pioneer family. The back depicts Father Hennepin receiving a peace pipe from the locals in 1680. Afterwards I wrote to asking for an interpretive sign that provides fuller context.

All Square

Stopped for lunch at a busy South Minneapolis restaurant. All the employees have been in prison, but today they get a living wage, training in personal and professional development, mentoring, and access to mental health and wellness services. The sandwich and service were great.

Bauhaus Brewery

Cycled over to Bauhaus Brewery for dinner with friends. In addition to beer, we were sustained by the best, most tender slow-cooked brisket from a smoker on a trailer.

New Americans

Sat in a room with hard-working Somalis in the basement of a Carnegie library. One hundred years ago I would have been sitting with Swedes in this same room.

My Mother’s Typewriter

Spotted this in the basement of a college friend of Dwight. Immediately recognized it as a Remington typewriter case. Inside was the same model my mother used when I was a kid. When I moved to America, the first company I worked for had once made these typewriters.
