Popped into Pow Wow Grounds, a Native-owned and operated coffee shop surrounded by one of the largest urban Native American populations in the country. When I ordered my coffee, the young barista ran a card on a string through the payment terminal causing it to display an unexpected “$0.” Noticing my confusion, he pointed to a sign and explained, “No charge for coffee for elders.” I accepted graciously.

Tibetan shrine room at the Minneapolis Institute of Art
Today, we visited the Tibetan Shrine Room, a temporary exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Buddhist artifacts are arranged as they might be found in an affluent Tibetan home. Buddhism’s emphasis on kindness to others is a valuable lesson for our times.
Friendly Offers on a Solo Island Hike
A ferry brought me to a small island where I followed OLLE trail markers—like these—along a route with varied terrain, going from sea level to the top of a small mountain. At the beginning, an old man suggested I rent a bicycle. Later, a car stopped next to me and the driver offered me a ride. In both cases, I thanked them then continued walking.
