Attended a wonderful session at the Auckland War Memorial Museum featuring seven Māori, a model for how to educate people about an indigenous culture. Later, we took an audio tour of about a dozen artifacts scattered throughout the museum, each with a queer story to tell. Here, I’m learning about Labour Party representative Louisa Wall, who was wearing this dress when the Marriage Amendment Bill was passed in 2013.

Sunset and a surprise holiday
Looked out at the sun setting over Downtown back home from our usual Thursday dinner out. My day hadn’t gone as planned. Yesterday, I got an email letting me know the school was closed today for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. So, while Dwight worked in the university greenhouse, I unexpectedly hit the trails.
DEI in action
Took a break from my bike ride at The Trailhead in Theodore Wirth Park. I love the soaring lines of this building. The non-profit Loppet Foundation built then donated the facility to the Minneapolis park system, and is involved in its daily operations, promoting DEI in this diverse part of the city. Inside, I sipped an Americano while watching kids getting ready to ride the mountain bike trails maintained by the Foundation.
The aroma of fresh tortillas
After my Thursday Teacher Tom stint, I sometimes pick up a still-warm pack of 36 corn tortillas (shown here, today, between a bowl of corn flour and a millstone) for $4 from a nearby tortilleria. They do magic with just three ingredients: corn, water, and lime. Back home, with the aroma of fresh tortillas wafting out of my daypack, I froze them in groups of six, separated by parchment paper.
Expanding the Repertoire
View from the lobby of Orchestra Hall while enjoying a pre-concert glass of wine. Tonight the Minnesota Orchestra featured pieces by six black composers, including two women. The art form tends to be Eurocentric, sometimes stodgy; tonight was refreshing, mixing it up.
Diverse Walk
On my diverse walk: an art gallery, a gingerbread Hardanger violin, and lefse for later at Norway House; American Indian galleries at All My Relations and the Minneapolis American Indian Center; tonkotsu ramen, and Chinese broccoli (for later) at United Noodles, an Asian supermarket.
Lunch at Tao
Enjoyed lunch at Tao Natural Foods, a place that embraces diversity.
