Millionaire’s Shortbread

At the doc’s office, learned I’d lost a few pounds without dieting, per se. Meanwhile, a friend pointed out a nearby bakery that has the best millionaire’s shortbread: shortbread, caramel, and chocolate. The salt crystals are inspired. I had to indulge.

Fine Seasonal Lunch

This plus crusty bread made a fine seasonal lunch. Minnesota strawberries are at their best right now: they’re small and flavorful. I’m convinced a strawberry is allocated a fixed amount of flavor, whether it’s big or small.

Satisfied my need for bibimbap. Comfort food.

Restraint

My new after-lunch treat: an Americano. Weight gain is a side-effect of my cancer therapy. The simple solution is fewer capuccinos and pastries.

Untrashed Restaurant

It still feels like a new experience to have a family meal in a restaurant and our young nephews haven’t trashed the place. Axel’s Bonfire, Blaine, Minnesota. They grow up fast.

The Language of Springtime

Wild spring onions, nettles, fiddlehead ferns, morels, spruce tips, ramps, the language of springtime. Tonight I’ll make morel risotto.

Cataplana

Walked a relaxed 22 Km south on a ridge trail, to a village with fab coffee, over rolling hills, to our final stop on the Rota Vicentina trail system: Vila do Bispo. Choosing fish for dinner was too difficult so we ordered Cataplana, a wonderful Algarve version of bouillabaisse.
