Maintaining Balance

It was a drippy morning, so a walk was in order. I stopped for coffee at Downtown’s Spyhouse, a place I usually associate with winter. At various points today, including while sipping my coffee, I continued my research on bicycle balance. So far, I’ve seen enough convincing evidence that a bicycle can maintain equilibrium without relying on gyroscopic or caster effects, contrary to popular belief.

  1. They do if they have sufficient caster angle on the front fork and a diamond frame in my experience Tom 🤔- good old touring bikes do it best! I shall have to dig out a YouTube video …

    1. Thanks, Jerry for injecting realism. I wouldn’t want to ride a bike without gyroscopic and caster effects. However, experiments like these suggest a bike can stay upright without those effects. I’ll be building a bike using LEGO MINDSTORMS and playing with some balancing parameters.
